What is a Quorum Disk?
You may ask me What is Quorum? Then probably you will move on to the question What is a Quorum Disk?
Quorum: When we setup Microsoft Failover Cluster, that cluster Setup has a configuration and those configurations stores in a database. Cluster Configurations database is Quorum.
Cluster Quorum will have the information’s like which nodes are participated to build a cluster, Cluster Quorum will have the information of the Resources and its attributes which are setup during the Cluster formation. Cluster Quorum will also know which node is active and which node is passive, all these information’s stores in Registry hives which are located in Quorum Disk.
In Windows Server 2008 R2 New types of Quorum Models – (Will Cover that in Microsoft Video Cluster Course will be live soon) are introduced in Failover Cluster.

Step by Step – How to Create Quorum Disk in Windows Server 2008 R2?
Let’s say you have installed Failover Cluster Features from Servers Manager – After that You need check the share storage which are allocated to your Physical or Virtual Servers which are going to participate in Cluster.
In Our Case its a Two Node Cluster – So we need prepare a Single Volume for Quorum for quorum disk.
Ok Lets start – Login to First Cluster Node 1 and open Disk Management and Run – Rescan
After that You will able to see a Fresh Disk in Our case its Disk 42 which 1 GB in Size
Now we Need to Right Click and Bring it Online
Ok Once its Online – next phase would be to Initialize the Disk – Right Click and Initialize the Disk
In This Process – We need to Select Our Disk in our case is Disk 42 and pick partition style and pick MBR( Master Boot Record) GPT (GUID Partition Table) is used for large disks which are larger then 2 TB. For Quorum Disk go for MBR as we dont need that much space 1 GB is enough for Quorum.
Now Disk is Imported Online as Basic Disk to create a New Volume
You need right click and click on New Simple Volume
Select or specify the Size of the Volume – Go for Full Size which is available and click Next
Select the Drive Letter as Q: Click Next
Label the Volume as “Quorum” and select Quick Format and click Next
Now Your Volume Q is Ready in Node 1
Now we need setup and prepare the Quorum Volume in another node with same drive letter for that we need to perform below steps
Now Right Click in the Disk from Node 1 and take it Offline
Once the Disk is Offline in Node 1
Login to Node 2 and Open Disk management console
Go to Action and click Rescan – which will refresh the device and sync with storage get the latest information
Right Click and Click Online
Now You will see the Volume will pick next available drive letter in our case it was G: – which is not same which we have defined in Node 1 as Q:
We will make the changes manually in Node 2 so that Disk Signature and Server Registry Get Updated with the Information that Disk 42 must be imported as Q:
Right Click on Volume and Click “Change Drive Letter and paths”
Click on Change
In this section pick Q: from the Drop Down Menu
it will give you a Warning – Click yes
Now we can see Node 2 is also Registers – Disk 42 as Q: Drive
Now Just Right Click and take offline this Volume from Node 2
Login to Node 1 and Bring the Disk 42 Online
Now the Volume Q: is Online on Node 1

What Is Windows Server 2012 Recovery Disk?
Windows Server recovery disk, also known as Windows Server 2012 repair disk, is a recovery tool that can troubleshoot your server computer in trouble. And it can be any bootable media (eg: USB flash drive, CD/DVD, a floppy drive). In general, if there is an installation disc coming with your computer, you can use it as a recovery disk. If not, you can download Windows Server 2012 recovery disk ISO file from Microsoft store and burn Window Server ISO to USB drive or CD/DVD.
However, whether the installation disc or recovery disk created by ISO, both can only be used on the specific computer, so you need to create a recovery disk for every operating system. For example, you can use the Windows Server 2012 recovery disk to factory reset or repair Windows Server 2012, but it does not work for Windows server 2012 R2/2016/2019/2020 or any previous version. Restore from Windows Server Backup
Step 1.Plug your Installation Disc or recovery USB into the optical drive. Then, connect the drive containing backup image to your computer and make sure it can be detected.
Step 2. Boot your server 2012 from the bootable media, and then you will see the Windows Server 2012 recovery mode. Set the language and other preferences.
Step 3. Then, click Repair your computer and then Troubleshoot > System Image Recovery.
Step 4. Select the listed operating system - Windows Server 2012.
Step 5. At the Re-image your computer screen, select the image created by Windows Server Backup. Then, click Next and follow the instructions until the last step.
